Hey Ken,
I know we should be on the subject of bus riding, but anyway you asked a
couple of questions and I'll do my best to answere them.
It's both. My last name comes from my great great grandfather, Charlie Cree
Sr.. He used to communte back and forth across the canadian border for work
near the Turtle Mountain Reservation in N.D. His Native name was too long and
difficult to say, so the U.S. Government along with the B.I.A. enforced a policy
where my grandfather and other natives had to change their names and/or make
up names to the english language. Since he was part Cree and the name was
simple to remember, he chose the name that we carry today. Dispite that kind of
action, we still use our aboriginal names.
My great grandparents Charlie and Salina, both had the Cree blood in them. My
grandmother, Salina was half Cree, Charlie I believe was 1/4 Cree. I would
have to ask my living grandfather and spititual leader, Francis more about this.
If you ask me what my heritage is, I would most likely say that I am a full
blooded Ojibwa/Cree. And yes, my last name is Cree. I hope this answers you
question, Ken. Thanks for the e-mail.
Del...Phillips Neighborhood, for over 2 decades now!
