I can answer question 2, at least. My partner and I have been to Pop! three 
times this year, and have yet to be disappointed. The burgers we had our 
first time there were done to perfection. Brunch was also fantastic (be sure 
to try the French toast if you go). Our last time there was for Valentine's 
Day--he had penne pasta, I had the salmon and couscous. Both, again, were 
great. And save room for dessert, or you'll miss out on the dulce de leche 
(I hope I spelled that right).

It's also pretty cool to run into old friends there--in my case, someone 
from my high school, which wouldn't be unusual except we're both from 
semi-smalltown Iowa.

I was sad to see Nan's go, but Pop! does a lot to ease the pain... ;)

And just to throw in my extra two cents, I prefer non-chain restaurants 
because I like the variety and the relative sense of adventure I get from 
being someplace new or unique. Chains aren't all bad (and some can be quite 
good), but after a while it all begins to seem a bit uninspired, doesn't it?
