[Mpls] auto anxiety

Turning south on Hiawatha from 46th street westbound is a turn I avoid like the plague. You will almost always sit for several lights.
Crossing Hiawatha does not seem to be nearly as bad.
I typically use the parkway via the roundabout in the park to get across Hiawatha to my home if coming from Highland park. Much easier.

It amazes me that with all of Minneapolis' and Minnesota's traffic engineers that this is a problem at all. Are we lacking in true expertise that we need the feds to help us out? Cannot we have figured out how to not have this problem at all considering the amount of time this LRT route has been in planning and building.

About a week ago I was trapped in congestion on 46th (if memory serves) and Hiawatha. This
morning, MPR confirmed my suspicion that there is no synchronization between the LRT and the
street lights. I sat not too far behind a light through 3 changes, while I watched drivers make
heroic maneuvers to enter the flow. Once I made it past the light, I got stopped at the next
light a few feet away next to the LRT station. I was kept entertained by the frogger-like
attempts of pedestrians to cross the street, though, so no worries. I watched three people abort
their trip across the street because they couldn't make it in time, and another sprinted to get to
the other side safely.

This is the same type of planning that has created the bermuda triangle of bottlenecks around
62/55, Ford Pkwy bridge, 5/West 7th.

If Soylent Green were made out of traffic planners, you wouldn't hear a peep from me. =P
