[Mpls] Smoking ban

The other night I went with a friend to the Dakota to hear the artist
Tierney Sutton. Now the Dakota is a Club - a real Club (finally in Mpls)
with all our other new jazz clubs. But the point- it was missing one
factor of the famous New Orleans, Kansas City and Chicago jazz and blues
clubs--- there was no smoke. I did not notice one person smoking in there
and I saw a couple of people go outside the place to smoke. This seemed to
be a self-imposed "no smoking" ban and was just delightful.
I, myself, can't stand smoke when eating so understand the ban much more in
restaurants.
I like the way the new Molly Quinn's has approached it with no smoking in
the biggest music room yet the addicts can still go over to the other side
of the place if they must have their cigarette.
My point - does there have to be a law or can the businesses figure it out
for themselves. And for those who hate it at such and such a place - they
just don't need to go there or need to whine to management enough to create
the change.
Just curious!
