I am glad this state has a Clean Indoor Air Act, and it has increased my
enjoyment of restaurants and bars. But I'm not so sure that banning
smoking completely at such places would reduce my exposure to it. When
my workplace banned indoor smoking in the early 1990s, those of us
coming and going from building entrances ran a gantlet of smokers. We
were exposed to a lot more smoke than when all smoking in the building
was limited to a single well-ventilated room. It was a mere 30 feet
from my desk but I never smelled--or inhaled-- the smoking within.
