Joan Thom posts: This past week end Hawthorne did a clean sweep. We had
enough volunteers to do litter clean up, and man Garbage Trucks for both
our residential and Industrial areas...Did we see any of this in the
MEDIA NO, After all Good things don't sell advertising, only
sensationalism.
Brandt here: Having organized my neighborhood's Clean Sweep for
several years, I'm glad the newspaper didn't cover yours or mine or any
of the others in the city. They may be public service, but they're not
news. As for positive developments, I happen to know that a Star
Tribune reporter was up at a school in Hawthorne this very morning.
That reporter had been around long enough to remember when the block on
which the school sits was the neighborhood's crack alley.
On another matter, I'd like to comment on drinking at the Capitol as
one who covered state government back in the Pleistocene epoch when
even-year Legislatures were expected to adjourn by planting time or face
the consequences from voters. There was drinking in the late 1970s
throughout the Capitol--Senate and House offices, the press room--but
only on the final night and only after the House and Senate adjourned
sine die.
