When the first segment of Hiawatha opened, the Star Tribune had a photo of
the I35-394 interchange when it was first built. Beautiful new
(subsidized!) "cloverleaf" ramps surrounded almost completely by empty
fields. We built it one way, and they came.

Today, many of the areas around Hiawatha stations are a little bleak, but
over time they will evolve into a less auto-centric environment.

Build it right (more good projects like the greenway streetcar) and the
people will come back to the city.
