You said you have never been to First Course - I highly recommend it. It
is wonderful and the people who work there are great. The food is not the
run of the mill stuff and is beautifully prepared and served - yet the
prices are reasonable. I have been there for several lunch meetings and
have always enjoyed it. And in answer to your thought that "nitch" (sp)
neighborhoods deserve something better than the ordinary, I would say we
all do - I live in north Minneapolis, not considered a "niche" neighborhood
in most people's minds, and we deserve it just as much as you do. Economic
status and your perceived elitism do not entitle you to more than those of
us in struggling neighborhoods have.

In response to this....my point over and over has been spending minimal
dollar for good homemade food, and my "personal elitism" was a joke as far
as I was concerned in responding to a previous post. And I believe all
neighborhoods deserve the best quality homemade food for their dollar. I
was not leaving out North Minneapolis, I was only directly my original
thread towards my particular surrounding neighborhoods...if you want to
start a thread about N Mpls food stops..lets do it. You have some great
choices over there. The Sample Room, Emilys,....The Modern,Mill City
Coffee....My percieved "elitism" is in regards to wanting good food, not
warmed up pre-fabbed food. I mean really I think this is a good
exploration of places that all of us should know about. Supporting our
own neighborhood small business's is a great thing. And Laura; I agree
the food is fine at El Norteno, but I have been there many times both
inside and outside for dinner, and it has taken 3 hours. It is good
quality food, homemade, probably like I said the best Guac, the best
enchilada sauce I have ever had-the wait is a bit long, and perhaps its a
staffing issue, however many neighbors that live with in walking distance
also have been hesitant to return unless we have lots of time.
My frustration is that there seems to be "nitches" or pockets, of
neighborhoods in S Mpls that have no where to eat real food. Sorry the
rib choices at Ted Cooks, or Caps don't make me salivate...and again it
feels like there is a invisible discrimination towards vegetarians...I get
tired of it, even if I was a carnivore, I would be mad if my only choice
was ribs. I mean I think the majority of the places we have discussed are
duds, prefabbed food service crap, microwaved, or baked off..People ought
not to settle for that for their dollar. Theres enough population in
these neighborhoods to support some diverse real food
establishments....not Embers, not Taco Bell, not even Papa Johns(which I
see is open at Lake Street Bridge area..YUK)..If they want to re-develop
some of these areas with more multi family homes, they better be ready to
find better food vendors. For me, I will not spend my dollar for food at
a chain, or a fast food establishment.
And no sorry, I am not interested in opening my own restaurant...pretty
happy in my own career! But glad to hear that Rybak is trying to get
someone in that Duigis space...it seems to look like theres some kind of
construction going on in there. I do personally think it would be a great
space for something. lets keep plugging away at putting the energy out
there for someone to snatch it up and make it something good!!
