   Jim, you are missing the point.  If we were not overcrowding the prisons with drug offenders, we would be able to give sex offenders enough time to protect the rest of us, up to a lifetime of time when someone has demonstrated after a third conviction for felony sex assault that it is unsafe to let them out where they can prey on the rest of us.
   And getting the law out of what substances people choose to put in their bodies does not shield them from prosecution if they commit real crimes that have victims while intoxicated with alcohol or other drugs.  The problem is that the man who hit Barb Lickness' son in the head with a beer bottle was not caught, prosecuted and imprisoned, not that he drank beer.  If drugs could be sold at the corner drug store, the drug dealers who are making Ms. Lickness life hell would be outcompeted by legal business outlets and her life would be no more negatively impacted than it is by the corner druug store.
