Bill Dooley, John McClellan, and Russell Raczkowski raise very important points and questions regarding bus rapid transit (BRT) on the I-35W corridor. 

I  authored  2003 legislation requiring MN  DOT to do a study of BRT on the I-35W corridor between Minneapolis and Lakeville and report findings and recommendations to the legislature at the end of this year.  It now appears that the study will be completed on time.

MN DOT will soon release a draft of the study which will attempt to address some of the questions raised by list members. The study will analyze various options including development of an exclusive lane (barrier separation), and a near-exclusive BRT/HOV lane among others. There will be two public information meetings during the last week of September on the study. One will likely be at MLK Park in Kingfield, and the other in Burnsville. Times and locations will be finalized next week.

I would strongly encourage list members interested in this issue to obtain a draft of the study when it is available and submit comments to MN DOT. I will continue to vigorously advocate for funding of transit in this corridor. It will be important to ensure that the  BRT component is adequately funded and provides a real transit option, with stations, good connections to the line, and frequent service. A strong turnout and interest on the part of Minneapolis residents will be important as the process moves forward.

  I agree with Russell. While I would have preferred light rail on the 35W  
  corridor, it looks like a busway will have to do, but, having a bus-car  
  intermingle does not make much sense.
