My goodness, is there no end to the levels of hair-splitting we can engage
in regarding this seemingly un-resolvable debate? I've enjoyed a variety
of refreshing alcoholic beverages at a number of the Mpls. establishments
on Dan's list. One of them even has "Bar" in their name. Many of the
others have large counter spaces which for lack of a better name,
apparently, have been referred to by both employees and patrons as the
"bar" within those establishments.
At any rate, it is indeed amazing to witness the controversy surrounding
the ban, particularly the comments from those who are adamantly opposed to
it - the majority of whom I've heard from have admitted to being smokers
themselves. I'm an occasional smoker of non-additive tobacco, and I've
actually been enjoying the nightlife during the past few days in
noticeably haze-free bars. I would actually go so far as to suggest that
the permissable outdoor smoking areas outside these establishments might
be better moved about 30 feet away from the entrances of those
establishments, though, for the benefit of those who might like to enter
without having to pass through a wall of smoke.
The sad irony of the ban is that some of us might actually breathe a bit a
bit easier without the smoke, like it or not. Yes, it's certainly an
impingement of our Constituional Rights and freedoms to have to live in a
potentially healthier environment, alright. Sheesh.
