You can drink in Minneapolis bars but you cannot smoke. For many
Minneapolitans, you will have to drive past a lot of bars to get to St.
Paul just to smoke. I don=92t think a lot of people will do that
consistently. =20
And, as gasoline prices soar, we are seeing some data that a good number
of people are in fact looking for ways to reduce the miles they drive. =20
Yes it true that people drive back and forth between the cities to go to
favorite restaurants. And there are no doubt people on my side of the
river who have a favorite bar on your side of the river. They will
continue to patronize their favorite bar "over there"! There will no
change in their behavior.
But, what I don=92t think will happen in great numbers is people
abandoning their favorite watering hole in Minneapolis just to go to St.
Paul so they can smoke. =20

It was suggested in a recent post that people would be unlikely to drive
to
Saint Paul from Minneapolis to be able to drink and smoke, "especially
with
$2.50 gas".
Many people drive between the two cities (and others) to go to their
favorite
restaurants, especially smoke-free ones in the past.
The cost of less than a gallon of gas compares in what way to the cost
of a
drink? For those who want to smoke, cutting back a drink and stretching
the rest isn't going to be a big drawback. Besides, they'll have less
alcohol in their bloodstream when they do drive home than if they had
not
smoked and had the extra drink near home.
