There were six hopefuls: Titi Bediako, Marie Hauser, Dennis Tifft,
Elizabeth Glidden, Jeff Hayden, and Darrell Robinson.
Only one made a poor showing. The others have each got something one
desires in a council member. For example: Titi has marks for her work as
a school teacher, We Win Institute, and a humongous Kwanza gathering
done annually. Elizabeth is a lawyer, and while sometimes that's not a
good thing, since we're in such a bad position vis-a-vis state block
grant funding lawyers can be helpful. Both Tifft and Hayden come out of
the neighborhood organizations where decisions are made about
development. Development is a big issue in the 8th at this point, along
with gentrification issues which devolve from it. However, not one of
them mentioned that in their opening remarks. Marie is very strong on
human and worker rights and has negotiating skills through her union.
It is gonna be a bear choosing just one.
It's an even bigger bear when you know five of the six candidates, some
of them for years and years.
There is no such thing as a composite council member.
