The Rev. Ian Bethel, pastor of New Beginnings Tabernacle, said that Peebles
was helping to close the learning gap between white and minority students, and
that the allegations and newspaper coverage amounted to a "bright daylight
lynching." -Star Tribune August 20, 2005, "Peebles' supporters want board member
to resign" by Anthony Lonetree.

[Doug Mann] What is the Strib's interest in reporting on allegations of
misconduct by Peebles, and the defense of Peebles by African-American leaders? The
Strib and other newspapers in this town are pretty good at ignoring or burying
things that would compromise other public figures, including the mayor,
school board, and city council, NAACP branch leaders, etc.
And what does all the hoopla over Peebles have to do with closing the
black-white learning gap?
In my opinion, most of the black-white learning gap is a reflection of an
ACCESS GAP, i.e., differences in access to a high quality education. I don't see
the school district's leadership (Peebles and the Board) or the State
Department of Education doing much of anything to correct that situation.
Peebles was not hired to help close the learning gap between white and
minority students. Peebles was hired because of her connections to the Broad
(pronounced "Brode") foundation, her "style," and her expertise re: how to implement
"No Child Left Behind" reforms for school districts with high poverty /
minority enrollment.
