A polluted environment adversely affects women more than it does men. Toxic
and cancerous chemicals land and reside in fat cells and tissue. Women have
more fat cells than men and can pass on toxic chemicals to their unborn. In
Minnesota cancer is now our leading cause of death and our environment gets
more polluted everyday.
The leading mayoral candidates like to palm themselves off as
environmentalists. All three are pushing for more housing and more jobs when we are not
using the housing we have efficiently and when we have too many people working
too long at completely non essential jobs which only causes more pollution,
inflation, greenhouse gasses and resource shortages. We need shorter work weeks
and vacations at least as long as Europeans enjoy. This would create more
jobs.
Building ever more housing will bring more pollution and congestion. If
almost everyone didn't have an internal combustion engine and if we lived simply
and frugally it would b a different story.
Our housing, crime and budget problems are insignificant when compared to
what we will face in the near future. Super storms are making their debut. We
can't reverse global climate change in our life times, but we can, to some
degree, slow its progress. It will take an effort greater than our mobilization
in World War Two. It will take an immediate serious conservation policy and
immediate use and development of renewable energy technology everywhere. This
will create essential and meaningful jobs.
Minneapolis must b a leader. Our federal government is doing nothing to try
to slow climate change and disruption. In fact they make things much worse by
giving billions to the deadly nuclear and fossil fuel industries. Our state
government and governor are doing nothing. Some cities are taking action and
Minneapolis must show the world what can b done. Conservation can bring great
wealth and cleaner air to our city and state. Conservation can reduce the
deadly mercury emissions. Conservation can prevent the flow of billions of
dollars out of our city and state that we spend on fossil and nuclear fuel.
Renewable energy can bring great wealth and health as well. The sun and wind in
this state are abundant and free.
Electing politicians who serve special interests and carry on with business
as usual is suicide. Electing politicians who only want to build more housing
when we are not using what we have efficiently and electing politicians who
want to create more jobs regardless of what kind of jobs, is a path to
apocalypse. Its time to stop being the most wasteful pigs on the planet. Its time
to show the world how we can put up beautiful solar arrays on our ugly
freeways, parking lots and ramps and generate thousands of kilowatts of electricity
from the free, clean, inexhaustible energy of the sun. Its time to use the
free funds that are available from the state and federal government. If we
don't use them they will not b re-funded. Its a no brainer... an investment we
can't refuse. We can't afford not to do it. The pay back would be immediate.
Our city desperately needs a leader and not a follower. We can use high tech
acoustic triangulated sensors in our high crime areas to detect gunfire in
split seconds and have police on the scene several minutes faster to make more
arrests of the most dangerous criminals in our city. The tactics of R.
Buckminster Fuller, maximizing efficiency, hybrid vehicles, hydrogen technology,
L.E.D. technology, organic vegetable gardens in schools, more lower cost
vegetarian meals for inmates, scaling back some of the expensive school busing
will not only reduce the pollution and greenhouse gasses we produce, these
actions will reduce our taxes as well.
This "logorhea" should again get the reaction of every hack, lobbyist and
spin master from the oil, coal and nuclear industry.
Sincerely, Don Johnson, Candidate for Mayor, 3808 Grand Ave So. Minneapolis,
