Subject: Financial contributions to the City of Minneapolis
This is a response to the question posed by Matty Lang in a message to
Michael Thompson on November 29, 2005 on the Minneapolis Issues Forum. I
am the City's chief financial officer.
The City receives donations of money, goods, or services from residents
and businesses. Donations can be made anonymously or in the name of the
donor. Donations can be for specified or unspecified purposes. Money
that is donated without a specified purpose is deposited in the City's
general fund and used for general governmental purposes. The City's
general fund is primarily used to support police, fire and street
maintenance purposes. All donations must be accepted by City Council
action. The department receiving the donation is responsible for
submitting the request City Council action to approve the donation.
If someone would like to make a donation they can either contact our
office by e-mail or phone or send donations to the address below (same
as noted in the message posted on Mpls Forum). Checks should be made to
"City of Minneapolis."
The City appreciates all donations, regardless of the amount.
I will ask the web site folks to add the above information to anyone
wanting to make a donation. This is a frustration that can readily be
fixed.
