This underscores why banning (or curtailing) cell phones is fool-hardy.
If a cell phone had been available, they could have engaged in phone
sex and would likely be alive today.
On a more serious note, the Department of Public Safety advocates the
use of cell phones to obtain traffic information in lieu of KBEM's
broadcasts of traffic snarls. Of course, the DPS staffer also
admonished me to pull off the freeway when calling for traffic
information.
Let's see ... I'm probably running late while driving and finding
forward progress is either stalled or at a walking pace. So, I call
511 to see if I should take an alternate route. But before I do, I
pull over at the next exit; find an off-road and off-shoulder spot to
park, make the call, obtain the information, then restart the car, wait
for the ramp stop lights to let me back on the freeway and resume my
trip.
Yep. Sure. Bet lots of us responsible folks will do exactly that.
