We residents of Minneapolis are fortunate in having one of the better towns in which to live. But there's no question we have some daunting challenges ahead of us. I think the extent to which we use REASON, not emotion, to attack those challenges will largely determine how good a town we have in 2010.
What do we think those challenges are:
1. Finance is obviously one of them
2. Law enforcement is also iimportant
3. Evolution towards a sustainable transportation system is another
4, Education is always one
What are others?
In finance, the tendency to window-dress rather than really solve problems is an example of emotion defeating reason.
In law enforcement, even as our total crime rate goes down, our sense of threat goes up. What is wrong here? And why are we emphasizing what we FEEL over what we KNOW?
We Americans love our cars. But it is often a sick love. We can watch ozone layers disappearing, ice caps melting, gas prices rocketing, and still we cannot conceive living without our cars. Why does reason so firmly get put in the back seat? Don't we care about future generations?
Education is another Minneapolis problem where it seems to me what I see is really emotion using false reason as a shield. If we are so much BETTER educated than today's kids, how come it isn't helping us REASON to the best solution?
