To my friends and supporters,

On this first day of the new year, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your ongoing support of my case and the ongoing work of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center to bring attention to the ongoing concerns of Somali immigrants in the United States and our particular concerns and struggles over the last few years.

I am driving to Memphis, Tennessee this weekend, and my trial will start on Monday, January 3rd in the Federal Court in the Western District of Tennessee. This last year has been very difficult on me and my family. I am going to trial on 6 felony counts of lying during a federal immigration interview. Each of the felony counts carries a maximum of 5 years in a federal prison, so I am facing a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison if convicted. My lawyer, Peter Erlinder, and myself are convinced that I will be exonerated in the courts and that justice will prevail. I hope to put this behind me and to get back to the important work of advocating for my community and to continue to build bridges of understanding and tolerance and justice.

Please take the time to call Terrell L. Harris, United States Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee and ask him to drop the charges against me. Explain that you support the work of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center and that I am a valued and productive community leader.

Terrell L. Harris Ph: 901-544-4231
                       Fax: 901-544-4230

Again, I want to thank you for your support, your e-mails, your thoughts and together I believe that we will be successful in our efforts. I will keep you updated through e-mails as the trial progresses.

Omar Jamal
