Actually, I sent a similar post about ten days ago (see
http://www.mail-archive.com/mpls@mnforum.org/msg32920.html ). But I frankly
think the tone of the proposals to DOT should not center on supporting KBEM
but instead on the need for the radio-based information. All the issues
regarding the need for KBEM and whether or not it serves a valuable purpose
are really irrelevant to DOT's primary mission.

What is relevant is that the service on KBEM provides easily accessed and
valuable information to motorists. It's much better than DOT's other
alternatives (the telephone 511 service, the signs and signboards, the
Internet, etc) And it's much better and comprehensive than the "traffic
updates" provided on commercial radio stations.

The cost of the service is reasonable for the benefit received (regularly
scheduled comprehensive updates plus ad hoc broadcasts if/when circumstances
dictate). I suspect that DOT could not find another station willing to
give them that amount/type of airtime for the money they pay and that KBEM
could thus continue. But appeals based upon the educational value/need for
KBEM aren't going to change DOT's mind.
