Reading this discussion, I have some trouble figuring out how a multi-passenger mode of transport like this will work when so relatively few people carpool.  Won't you just end up with a four-passenger pod with one passenger and thereby wasting a great deal of the inherent investment?  
 
Personally, I like the system they have in Toronto.  It runs at all times of day and night, you don't have to wait long, it uses energy very efficiently.  And it can connect you to your car in a park and ride for the part of the trip where a car must be used for convenience.
 
The real shame is the fact that our area waited so long to take any action that now it will cost the maximum in dollars and inconvenience.  Toronto acted 55 years ago, got jobs for returning veterans and provided infrastructure for growth over the whole 55 year period.
 
Will we argue for decades about this and insure the costs are even more outrageous?
