[Mpls] leaf blowers

But if we ban leaf blowers, why not lawn mowers, chain saws, motorized
scooters and any other device that makes too much noise? This smacks of the
work-place safety excuse for the smoking ban. Smoking is a workplace hazard
but no one does anything about noise that regularly exceeds OSHA's safety
standards.

And how the heck will the city enforce this? Police numbers are thread bare
enough so that officers struggle to take vacation time or make use of comp
time. Will they have time to go respond to a noise complaint over a leaf
blower? It reminds me of problems with garbage trucks in residential
neighborhoods before 6am. Ya, technically it's against the city ordinance
but it's a huge pain in the rear to get anything done about it. Is this
going to be the result?

"THE QUIET COMMUNITY COALITION believes that leaf
blowers are more of a nuisance than a convenience and
are a health hazard. We would like the Minneapolis
City Council to review the actions of the 200 or-so
other North American cities which regulated or banned
leaf blowers and take similar action."

I think the city should ban leave blowers. As Stephen
said, we put bans on noise and pollution all the time.
Leaf blowers are loud and irritating, waste limited
natural resources, and contribute to asthma and other
lung ailments.

For that reaosn alone I think more people would be in
favor of the ban. The levels of city kids with asthma
has skyrocketed and is a serious public health issue.
