Possibly the coolest event of the Aquatennial season will be held at North
Mississippi Regional park (exit at 49th or 53rd Ave N off I-94) -- The
Mississippi River Logboom on July 16 and 17.
The World Log Rolling Championships go from 10 AM to 6 PM on Saturday and 10
till 5 on Sunday. Along with them are concerts in the evening till 10, a
beer garden with food, family activities at the Carl Kroening Interpretive
Center, log rolling demonstrations, a climbing wall, the Chmielewski
Brothers polka band(!!!), and so on.
Admission is free.
Parking shuttles will run from Jenny Lind and Olson schools (both along 49th
Ave N. Jenny Lind is closer to the river, at about Dupont).
>From the website: Log rolling is a sparring sport similar to wrestling or
boxing. The point is to try to dislodge your opponent without touching
him/her, using fancy footwork, speed, and strength. Contestants may not
cross a center line and must roll the best three of five falls. Judges are
present to declare the winner of the fall.
Competition occurs in junior and adult divisions. Bleachers for up to 1300
spectators surround a man-made pool. Youth competition starts at 10 a.m.
both days, ending about 1:30 p.m. Adult rollers compete between 2 7 p.m.
on Saturday with championship competition ending at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
