I should say that I believe everyone has a right to their opinion, and
everyone should be heard. I'll give that woman credit, she was brave
enough to speak up. Perhaps I could have stayed, but I knew if I
stayed, things would've gotten ugly, I probably would have said things
in the heat of the moment that I would regret, So I chose to remove
myself from the situation. All I can say is that the DFL says it is
the party of tolerance, inclusion, etc. and I got the very clear
message that to an increasing number of people, it is not. Everything
that party is supposed to fight against was brought full circle in
that womans statement, and brought to bear against one group of
people. Racism, sexism, classism. It's ok to exclude "them".
I should also say that it was a wake up call for me, and now I have a
bit more insight into what people feel like when they are being
excluded. I have a bit more empathy. I only hope I can keep that with
me and keep trying to help. I'll just have to find another way of
doing it.
