Personally, I'm against IRV as well, but for a different nonpolitical reason: 
It's not a Condorcet method.  Wikipedia (which is having server problems 
right now) has a lot of information on the subject:

And, there's a 'compatible' (from the voter's perspective) method called CSSD 
that works just fine:
