Actually, availability of other forms of birth control (pills, medical
procedures, women deciding not to have children) served to open women's
minds to other goals. Before Roe we could not buy a house without a
cosigner, have our own credit cards, get into college and grad school
then get hired afterwards, or buy a car with a loan. It was a lot more
difficult to do other than marry and reproduce. About a zillion things
contribute to lowering the birth rate. Then we did a big campaign called
Zero Population Growth in which women voluntarily agreed to have no more
than two children to replicate themselves and their significant others,
but not increase the population. At the same time, of course, we have a
human population on this planet that is above the 5 billion mark. While
the planet can still produce enough food to feed us (though that is
changing), we humans are too busy arguing about who owns what piece of
land, or resource, to spend time and money coordinating food delivery to
feed us all.
There are so many levels on which it makes sense to limit the number of
humans voluntarily, but the studies I have seen most frequently are
those which correlate rise in income with a drop in the number of
children per couple.
I would conclude, then, that abortion is one of hundreds of reasons why
the birth rate is lower. Many American women and their partners are
apparently sowing common sense and we are all reaping a slower rate of
population growth as a result.
