If everyone will permit a point of personal privilege...

I wanted to let Mpls-Issues members know that I'll be leaving my job =20
as editor of the Southwest Journal and Downtown Journal on Nov. 11.

It's a voluntary thing; I'm not going out of here spitting nails =20
about the bosses or anything. The joy of having an "ideal" job is =20
that it sucks you in thoroughly; the problem is that it sometimes =20
doesn't let go when you need it to.

On a personal level, I like change; for the first time in many years, =20=

I can contemplating a blank slate, a sabbatical of sorts. At 46, it's =20=

good to still be able to take risks. For now, I plan on honing my =20
cooking skills and picking up my kids from school every day.

One of the most exciting things is that I'll have the time to look =20
for another way to contribute to the community =97 possible a way I =20
can't even imagine right now. Or I could wind up writing and editing =20
again.

Some words of thanks: to the staff here, especially all the reporters =20=

who get out on the streets and on the phones to find out what's =20
happening. Reporting is a rare commodity and the papers here have a =20
lot of it.

Also, my bosses, Terry and Janis, who backed me up on every =20
controversial story we did. (I'm proud of the fact that we wrote =20
tough pieces on our two biggest advertisers this year.) Not every =20
owner does that, especially in the community newspaper biz.

I also want to thank Mpls-Issues members, who have been a great =20
source of tips, information, feedback, prodding and occasional butt-=20
kicking. Even though I had no clue I'd be editing the Journal when I =20
co-founded the list in 1998, the citizens of Mpls-Issues and Journal =20
journalists have helped each other for the betterment of Minneapolis.

The Journal was excellent before I got here and I expect it will be =20
excellent after I leave. I think everyone knows papers like the =20
Journal have become more crucial to the Mpls body politic in recent =20
years; I'm proud I could help fill the gap.

And yes, I still plan on managing the Mpls-Issues list, and perhaps =20
weigh in on a few more topics if the career path allows.
