"How much discrimination on the basis of color is there in Minneapolis?
Where does it occur and to whom and in what contexts?"
David Strand, Loring Park
Our multi-racial daughter, with Jamaican, Dominican, Irish and Italian heritage in fairly equal parts is now 19 years of age. In a group of people of (a variety of) color, she pretty much blends in, as she does in a group of white (-ish) people. When she was a younger teen, she was arrested 2 times for violating curfew, and was brought home 2 times without arrest for violating curfew. The two times she was brought home, she was with her white friend Leah. One of the times she was arrested, she was with her black friend April at a bus stop in Uptown. Another time she was in a car in front of our house with her black boyfriend (the police didn't believe she lived here). Neither incident involved any other crime or incident. Arrest means being searched, questioned, taken to the curfew center in North Minneapolis until being picked up by a parent or guardian, being charged with a (status) crime, going to court, paying a fine or doing community service, and having a record.
She did some research on this for a South High school project and SW Journal article, and the numbers very much support her anecdotal experience.
