[Mpls] A Hope for Diversity in the Minneapolis Police Department

Gregory is right on the mark. Though often Gregory and I have slight
differences of opinion on the Police Department I can not agree more with
him on this issue. It is important to remember that the MOST qualified
people should be advanced and put in command situations regardless of their
skin color, ethnic background, sexual orientation, age, or gender.

I support the idea of affirmative action IF the individuals are equal in
qualifications. To discriminate against an individual person because of
their skin color or gender is just as wrong and just as illegal if they
happen to be male and White. I find the suggestion of something different
to be just as repugnant when reversed. It is hardly amusing to have some
folks justify racism and sexism on the basis of its being alright because
those being discriminated against are white or male. Is it so hard to
understand that it is INDIVIDUAL merit that is in question and the fight is
to overcome discrimination against INDIVIDUALS? If some of the things
written to support discrimination against that group were reversed there
would be outrage. There should be the same outrage in this situation.

Thanks Gregory. As a graying, Caucasian appearing, with origins from a lower
socio-economic class, male from the human race I appreciate your support,
even if I have no interest in being a police person.

Jim Graham,
Ventura Village
