[Mpls] Nicollet Island

There is no "program" to get anybody off Nicollet Island because no one
wants De La Salle or the residents to leave the island! Both the
historic homes and the high school have been there a long time and there
is no reason for either to leave. I am pretty certain that those of us
who oppose building a football stadium on Nicollet Island park land
would be just as strongly opposed to building new homes on park land as
well!
De La Salle can have its own football stadium with all the amenities it
wants because there are alternatives within 5-9 blocks of the high
school. But for reasons still unclear to many, De La Salle stadium
proponents refuse to consider any other location other than Minneapolis
park land.

This is the aspect of the DeLaSalle football field debate that has
always puzzled me: why does the status quo have such a privileged
position?
If the arguments about the unique historical and ecological nature of
Nicollet Island are true, why aren't we trying to roll back existing
development -- why isn't there a program trying to get the residents
and/or the high school off the island?
Just curious.
