Minneapolis is Responding to Hurricane Disaster

Public Statement by Mayor R.T. Rybak:

The disaster in the Gulf Coast is a tragedy that requires an unparalleled response. Emergencies like these transcend city and state boundaries, making intergovernmental coordination essential.

The City of Minneapolis is responding to the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina by working through the Interstate Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) to send needed resources as requested. Because of the magnitude of this disaster it is important that Minneapolis coordinate our response through EMAC to have the strongest, most effective impact.

EMAC has requested and I have authorized Chief McManus to work with other law enforcement agencies to deploy a coordinated “strike” team of trained officers, along with the food and supplies they need. Our people and resources are ready to go as needed.

The City is represented on EMAC by our Emergency Preparedness Directors Rocco Forte and Kristi Rollwagen and they will be in constant contact with EMAC about how Minneapolis can continue to promptly respond to the needs of the Gulf Coast communities.

We are also working with several community partners on options to help stranded people get to and be housed in Minneapolis. I am already working with civic, business and faith leaders to coordinate short-term and long-term resettlement plans, which we hope to report on soon.

Responding to the Gulf Coast disaster will be a long-term commitment that requires sustained compassion. I encourage the people of Minneapolis to prepare for and commit themselves to continued support for those affected by this catastrophe.

Monetary donations to a reputable organization remain the best way to provide immediate assistance. Along with a number of faith congregations, my office has created a ‘Minneapolis Relief Fund’ at the Minneapolis Foundation. To donate, send your check to Minneapolis Relief Fund c/o Minneapolis Foundation, 800 IDS Center, 80 South 8th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55402.

Those who wish to donate and/or volunteer in the weeks ahead can also contact the Minnesota Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (MnVOAD) at www.mnvoad.org or 612-664-8589.
