At the September 3, 2003 meeting, while discussing the [soon to be abortive]
Superintendent Search, commissioner Jon Olson said that he absolutely wanted
to see proof of an education degree for candidates.

Fast forward to 2004 in the repeat Superintendent Search, and suddenly the
degree and the proof seemed no longer important. Under public pressure, Jon
Gurban's educational qualifications are finally made public. Gurban has a
3-year Canadian degree in Physical Education. The other candidate, Cris
Gears, has a Bachelor of Arts in Management and Administration from an
American university (a 4-year degree).

Commissioner and candidate Carol Kummer, in a stunning display of ignorance,
says she is going to vote for Gurban in part because while Gurban has a degree
in park management, Gears only has a degree in Art.
