LWV, AAUW and Winona Area Chamber Holding Educational Forum on Referenda:
Winona City Sales Tax and State Dedicated Transportation Funds Thursday
October 12, 2006

The League of Women Voters, Winona Unit is co-sponsoring a Voter Service
forum on Thursday October 12, 2006, with the American Association of
University Women, Winona Area PTA, and Winona Area Chamber of Commerce for
local and state referenda issues on the general election ballot.
Representatives of the City of Winona and the Winona County Highway
Engineer, Dave Kramer will present the referenda issues. The presenters
will be providing the rationale from the City of Winona and the State of
Minnesota that placed the issues on the general election ballot.
These issues are presented directly to the voters, as funding issues. If one
chooses not to vote on a question, the ballot is counted as a “no” vote.
Non-partisan organizations, like the LWV and Chamber do take positions on
general government issues. Those positions will be stated at the forum.
The public is invited to question the panel. Written questions to the
candidates will be generated from the audience in attendance. The
moderated event encourages an exploration of the issues from the audience in
attendance.

The forum begins at 7:00 PM in the council chambers of the Winona City Hall,
4th and Lafayette Streets in Winona. The forum will be broadcast live on
the government access cable TV Channels for Charter and HBCI. Radio and
newspaper media are also invited to attend. During the televised forum, a
telephone line to call in questions will be available.

An additional forum is planned for the Winona County Commissioner, Sheriff
and Winona City Council Candidates. This forum will be on October 17, 2006
at 7:00 PM in Winona City Hall.

The League of Women Voters, Winona Unit, Women’s Resource Center of Winona,
the American Association of University Women, Winona Area PTA Council,
Winona Area Chamber of Commerce and Winona On-Line Democracy encourage all
voters to go and vote on the Election Day, November 7, 2006. Voter
pre-registration is recommended if you are a new voter or have moved since
the last election. The public is reminded that the state has a deadline for
registering. In Minnesota one can register at the polls, but you need
valid identification. Absentee ballots and or voter registration information
is available from the Winona County Auditors Office, Winona County
Government Center, First Floor, at 177 Main Street, Winona, MN.
