Re: [Winona] new topicDwayne,
I recall corresponding with you via email back when the school closing debate was hot and heavy. We agreed to not forward each others emails. I am having a difficult time reading your editorials lambasting a certain School Board member about their stand on neighborhood schools when you in fact supported the exact same thing even naming Madison and Central schools as buildings that should remain open. If you need a reminder I will kindly forward copies of your emails back to you. Lets base this election on the truth. This school district is in better shape and is headed in a better direction than it was 4-5 years ago. Give credit where it is due. Although it befits you, stop the mudslinging campaign.

To say the least, Kelly Herold and I have some different opinions when it comes to the School Board.
But I do respect the fact that he (and Sue Brown) still read and respond to Winona Online Democracy.
I also strongly agree with Kelly's suggestion that Winona Online Democracy try to host some kind of candidate debate or forum.
We have tried that before in the past but only had very limited success because many candidates weren't willing to participate.
Maybe it might work this time around.
This is exactly the kind of thing Winona Online Democracy was created to do.
It obviously can't be me but would others be willing to try to help put the forum or debate together?

I think an important topic area is to consider the following.
I believe that the candidates running for office should have a chance to lay out their positions on key issues.
No where else would candidates have a chance to share with the public their thinking as thoroughly as WOD.
The WDN blog and other blogs have become popular and interesting I suppose. But where else can candidates and the public get a chance to learn more about positions.
I also believe that their should be some constraints - that is - WOD debate the issues to be considered and each candidate given a reasonable word limit to make their case.
For example, Mr. Voegli and I more than likely disagree on the issue of school closure. Both of us have somewhat reasonable arguments and even though we aren't running against as of our interaction via the WDN and blogs people know where we stand. If he were running for the school board or if I were running again - folks would be able to clearly compare us.
So I ask that we consider
1. Candidacies
District 31 senate
School board
County commissioners
Sheriff
2. Then if folks are agreeable to that discussion as to what 4-8 major issues pertinent to each office.
If this is done fairly and well - folks could be directed to the WOD as the place to be to learn about candidates.
As is I don't know where else a compare and contrast venue can be birthed and allow for good breadth and depth.

Something I personally enjoy discussing when I'm able:
Why does the American media since WW2 try to terrify the public with it's reporting?
It does not cover much of the REAL good America, which is everywhere if you look for it, but tends to prefer to make the public fearful and distrusting of their government.
I realize that a fearful public is easier to control than a bunch of free thinkers.
Any other suggestions?
